WASHINGTON -- Although vaccines have been recognized for their very impressive
record of disease prevention, some are associated with rare reactions that carry
a risk of injury to your child, and in some cases, death. To ensure that your
child gets the benefits of vaccines while minimizing risks:
Ask the following questions before vaccination.
- Is my child sick right now?
- Has my child had a bad reaction to a vaccination before?
- Do I know if my child is at high risk of reaction?
- Do I have full information on the vaccine's side effects?
- Do I know how to identify a vaccine reaction?
- Do I know how to report a vaccine reaction?
- Do I know the vaccine manufacturer's name and lot number?
- Does my child have a personal family history of vaccine
reactions, convulsions or neurological disorders, severe allergies or immune
system disorders?
Know your rights.
By law, health providers must: Give you the government
``benefit/risk information'' before your child is immunized; keep a permanent
record of all vaccinations given, including the vaccine manufacturer's name and
lot number; report all adverse events, including injuries and deaths which occur
within 30 days after vaccination, to federal health authorities.
Be aware.
Watch your child closely for symptoms after vaccination, and
call your doctor if you suspect a reaction. Serious events could include a high
fever, high-pitched screaming, breathing difficulty, shock, seizures, coma or
lowered consciousness.
